Carpenter got off to a hot start in Saturday’s final round, which is a good thing because the front nine is the side you must attack at Aberdeen. He made birdie on three of his first five holes and pushed his lead to four shots. There was no turning back.
The 2009 champion, Skip Berkmeyer, ended his 27th consecutive Amateur Championship with a solo third-place finish. Berkmeyer carded rounds of 73-68-69, including both the 68 and 69 rounds at bogey free golf. It was a nice tune-up for Berkmeyer, who has qualified for the U.S. Amateur, to be played in another week at Pinehurst (N.C.) Resort.
