HYANNISPORT, Mass. (Nov. 3, 2013) — Make room for a new member of elite golfers on Cape Cod.
Bill Van Stratum of Dennis Pines joins the ranks as he won the Cape Cod Amateur championship on Sunday, edging nine-time winner Kevin Carey, also of Dennis Pines, 1-up, in Sunday's windblown finals at the Hyannisport Club.
Nasty weather challenged the players in the morning semifinals, and when the rain subsided in the afternoon, a wicked north wind buffeted the seaside layout. All in all, it made for a long, difficult day. Bizarre, too.
In the Senior Division semifinals, Cape Cod National's John Crook outlasted Hyannis Golf Club's Dick King, 1-up, and David Kennedy of Hyannis GC topped Barry Jones of the Captains on a conceded birdie putt on the 18th hole.
