Cape Cod Amateur: Michael Walker wins the Championship Division

Kevin Carey wins the medalist and match play championship in the Senior Division.

Michael Walker won the Cape Cod Amateur at Hyannisport Club in Hyannisport, Mass.

Walker finished second in the stroke play portion to earn the No. 2 seed in the match play bracket. Trevor Kenney and Kyle Van Cleef finished T3 at even par.

Sam Russell finished as the stroke-play medalist, shooting a 2-under 69. He bettered Walker by one shot, with Walker shooting a 1-under 70.

However, Russell lost in the Round of 32 to the No. 32 seed Nathan Roberts 4&3.

Walker defeated the No. 31 seed 6&5 and then took down No. 18 seed Connor Levesque 1-up to advance to the quarterfinals.

In the quarterfinals, Walker defeated No. 23 seed Brian Fleckles 6&5 and defeated No. 3 seed Trevor Kenney in a suspenseful match in 19 holes.

In the championship match, Walker defeated No. 5 seed Matthew Cornuet 3&1 to win the Championship Division.

Carey shot a 2-under 69 to win medalist in the stroke play portion to earn the top seed. Joe Walker finished in second place after a round of 1-under 70 as the only other player to finish under par.

Carey did not waste any time in the first two rounds, defeating No. 16 seed Richard Strachan 7&5 in the Round of 16 and defeating No. 8 seed Roy Murphy 6&5 in the quarterfinals.

In the semifinals, Carey defeated No. 12 Barry Jones 1-up, and in the final match, Carey defeated No. 10 seed Jeff Johnson 3-up.

Carey also won the 2022 Cape Cod Senior Amateur Championship.

The Cape Cod Amateur and Senior Amateur Championship is open to any Cape Cod or Islands resident and/or Hyannisport member with under a 5.0 handicap index.
