Brannon Fahrny grinds his way to a Yorba Linda title

The Cal State Fullerton freshman survives tough conditions at Black Gold Golf Club to win by 2

Brannon Fahrny shot consecutive rounds of 1-over 73 to win the Yorba Linda City Championship at Black Gold Golf Club.

The Cal State Fullerton freshman overcame difficult scoring conditions to finish two shots ahead of the field a 2 over par, far higher than Satchel Herrmann's winning score of 8 under last year and Ricky Castillo's 11 under in 2019.

In fact there were only two under-par rounds recorded over the entire weekend, as winds kicked up and swirled around the Black Gold layout.

Fahrny's opening-round 73 put him in fourth, two shots behind Ethan Thomas. But with the entire lead group faltering on day two, it was anyone's tournament.

The key to contending was keeping doubles off the scorecard, and Fahrny did so nearly the entire way, until a 5 at the par-3 16th dropped him into a tie with Grant Martens and Jack Barber. But a birdie at the par-4 17th coupled with Martens and Barber both bogeying the par-5 18th gave Fahrny the cushion he needed to par the last for a two-shot win. Jonny Lewis finished in the tie for the runner-up spot at 4 over par.

Flight winners included:

Shelly Haywood (157) - Women's Championship Flight
Osbourne Blake (157) - Senior Championship Flight
Betsy Walden (150) - Women's Net Flight
Grant Coonley (140) - Men's First Net Flight
