Callaway built the iron with an unusually wide sole for a blade, then strategically removed material to help it move through the turf like a much narrower traditional muscle back.
Developed for Tour
The Apex MB Tour Raw project began approximately two years ago with a clear objective: develop a muscle back capable of becoming the foundation of Callaway's tour iron lineup.
The company identified longtime blade players including Min Woo Lee, Nicolai Hojgaard and Si Woo Kim as key targets during the design process. Callaway also studied its popular 2018 Apex MB and a Japan-market X Forged Prototype to establish a starting point for the new shape and sole geometry.
Engineers combined elements from both models, then worked directly with tour players to refine the design.
The resulting prototype quickly found its way into competition. Min Woo Lee used the irons during his victory in Houston, while Si Woo Kim, Nicolai Hojgaard and Chris Kirk have also put them in play. Sam Burns moved into the Apex MB Tour Raw from a cavity-back model, and Callaway says the iron has attracted interest from players outside its staff roster as well.
According to Callaway, the model has been its most-played iron on the PGA Tour during many weeks and has gained significant adoption among its players on the DP World Tour.
A Wide Sole That Plays Narrow
The defining feature of the Apex MB Tour Raw is its tour-inspired Tri-Sole design.
While the sole appears wider than golfers may expect from a traditional blade, the playable portion remains relatively narrow. A relieved leading edge extends from the hosel and around the toe, helping prevent excess material from catching the turf through impact.
That toe-side relief can be especially helpful for high-speed players who create more shaft droop during the swing. It is also designed to help the club move cleanly through thicker rough and varying turf conditions.
Additional trailing-edge relief allows the head to exit the ground quickly rather than digging. The result is a sole intended to provide added stability without taking away the turf interaction, shot-making versatility or face control expected from a muscle back.
Callaway Senior Manager of Irons R&D Ryan Ritchie described it as a wide sole featuring design elements that allow it to "play like a narrow sole."
Classic Appearance With Subtle Performance Benefits
At address, the Apex MB Tour Raw maintains the thin, compact appearance preferred by accomplished ball-strikers. Look more closely, however, and the topline is slightly thicker than that of a conventional blade.
Callaway uses subtle shaping to hide that additional thickness from the player's view. The extra mass is intended to improve consistency on strikes made slightly higher or lower on the face without disrupting the iron's traditional profile.
A 360-degree mill cut around the face perimeter gives Callaway precise control over the final shape. That process also creates a secondary chamfer near the leading edge, helping the club enter the turf with less resistance.
Each head is forged from a single piece of 1025 carbon steel to deliver the soft feel and feedback expected from a premium muscle back. The raw finish and minimalist cavity design complete the tour-inspired appearance, with Callaway's chevron serving as the primary visual detail.
As with other raw-finished irons, golfers should expect the heads to develop a unique patina and show signs of oxidation over time.
