Berkeley Cup: Taylor Smith goes Wire-to-Wire for the win

After a great 4-under 69 first round, Smith hung on to win the championship.

It wasn't a perfect final 18 holes, but the lead Taylor Smith had already built up would be good enough for him to hold on for the win at the 2023 Berkeley Cup at Berkeley Hills Country Club in Duluth, Ga.

Smith, the 2018 Georgia Mid-Amateur champion, is a current member and club champion at Berkeley Hills, so familiarity was not an issue.

Smith shot a final round 1-over 73 to finish the Cup 4-under and win wire-to-wire by three shots over Matt Epperson. Epperson, the Kentucky Mid-Amateur champion, finished 1-under for solo second place and was the only other golfer to finish under par.

Smith recorded 13 birdies and nine bogeys to shoot rounds of 68-71-73. A birdie barrage punctuated Smith's first round 4-under 68 to end the round, as he made birdie of Holes No. 15-18.

Daniel Keddie finished in solo third place at even par, Nick Maccario finished in solo fourth place at 1-over, and Jack Larkin Jr. finished in solo fifth place at 2-over.

In the Senior Division, Mike Combs won by 12 shots at 15-over.
