The San Clemente Men's Amateur is underway, and Ben Phipps has staked out the early lead at San Clemente Golf Club, the historic municipal layout that has crowned champions ranging from Mark O'Meara and Kevin Na to Paul McGinley over the years.
Phipps opened with a 3-under 69 to sit atop the leaderboard after round one, with Pete Williams a shot back at 1-under 71. Those are the only two scores confirmed so far, and plenty of golf remains on the course as the rest of the 160-player field works through the opening round. Check back for updates as more scores post.
