Before He Was Pro: Austin Smotherman

Two straight PGA Tour wins have made Austin Smotherman a headliner. Fourteen years ago, this site watched a 17-year-old lose a national junior title by a single shot — then come back the next summer and take the course record and the trophy.

Monday morning at Port Royal, with the wind still whipping in off the Atlantic, Austin Smotherman made a par on the third playoff hole to beat Seamus Power and win the Butterfield Bermuda Championship. The final round had been blown out entirely — the tournament decided over 54 holes at 16-under 197, then a playoff on the par-3 16th. It was Smotherman's second win in a row, three weeks after his first PGA Tour title at the Bank of Utah Championship, which arrived in his 100th career start. The two victories put him into next year's U.S. Open at Pebble Beach and the season's first two Signature Events.

If you're new to the name, welcome. Readers of this site met Austin Smotherman in the summer of 2011, when he was 17 years old and playing the hottest golf of anyone in Mississippi.
