MEQUON, WI (August 29, 2017) - Recent odd-numbered years have belonged to Racine County golfers in the Wisconsin State Golf Association Senior Amateur Championship.
They have been especially kind to Ramiro Romo of Norway, who won the title for the second time in four years by shooting a 1-under-par 69 Tuesday at Ozaukee Country Club.
This year’s tournament was shortened to one round. The first round, scheduled for Monday, was canceled because of inclement weather.
Romo, who won the title in 2013 at West Bend Country Club, had five birdies and four bogeys in his round. After a 1-over 36 on the front, he had three birdies and just one bogey on the back for a 2-under 33.
Other top-25 finishers with county ties were Jim Webers of Pleasant Prairie, a former Racine Tri-Course Amateur and Racine County Open champion who tied for 10th at 74, and Paul Zarek of Burlington, the 2015 Senior Amateur champion, who tied for 17th at 75.
In the Super Seniors Division (age 65-69), Racine’s Jim Covelli tied for 10th at 78. In the Legends Division (age 70 and older), Racine’s Bruce Hansen tied for third at 74.
