GREENWOOD, MS (October 23, 2016) -- The professionals may have won the Sunday singles but the amateurs by the way of a 12-12 tie were able to retain the Mississippi Cup.
Playing at Greenwood Country Club, the professionals outscored the amateurs 6.5-5.5 on the final day but were not able to secure the half point necessary to win back the cup.
DAY ONE RECAP
The Mississippi Golf Association has opened up a 6.5-5.5 lead over the Mississippi PGA after the first day of the Mississippi Cup Matches. Sunday's singles matches will determine the outcome at Greenwood Country Club.
In the morning four-ball the MPGA opened a 3.5-2 lead and then extended their lead to 5.5-2 with wins in the first two matches of the afternoon foursomes.
The amateur winners in the four-ball matches were the teams of Alan Ellis and Scott Rhodes; Richard Reed and Ben Snow. In the afternoon foursomes full points went to Scott Rhodes and David Sellers; Josh Oller and Alan Ellis; Richard Reed and Josh Lampley; Brandon Laird and Michael Naaman.
However, the amateurs would halt the momentum winning the final four matches of the day to flip the script.
