Southern California captures the team title at Pasatiempo, while Jack Buchanan leads a strong Trojan performance
SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — Southern California closed out a hard-fought victory at the 79th Western Intercollegiate, holding off a late push from California to secure the team title at historic Pasatiempo Golf Club.
The Trojans finished at 14-under, edging California by two shots in one of the tightest finishes of the spring season. UNLV claimed third at 7-under, while Arizona, BYU, and Stanford all shared fourth at 6-under.
USC’s victory was built on a dominant second round that ultimately proved to be the difference. After posting a tournament-best 16-under team score in Round 2, the Trojans were able to withstand a steady final-round charge from California, who played the final round at even par to keep the pressure on through the closing holes.
At the top of the individual leaderboard, Jack Buchanan delivered a wire-to-wire performance to earn the Blue Jacket, finishing at 11-under. The USC standout followed an opening 67 with a blistering 62 in Round 2 before closing with an even-par final round to secure the title.
Stanford’s Dean Greyserman made a dramatic final-round move, climbing into solo second after a closing 62, while San Diego State’s Harry Takis and Arizona’s Taishi Moto shared third at 9-under.
Pasatiempo once again proved to be a worthy stage, testing the nation’s top collegiate players with its firm greens, strategic bunkering, and classic Alister MacKenzie design. The course rewarded aggressive play when executed well, but penalized even the smallest mistakes.
Pasatiempo Golf Club, designed by Dr. Alister MacKenzie, remains one of the premier venues in collegiate golf. Recently restored to its original vision, the par-70 layout demands elite iron play, precision, and imagination around the greens.
With another elite field and a dramatic finish, the Western Intercollegiate once again lived up to its reputation as one of the most important events in college golf—producing both a worthy team champion and a standout individual performance.
