Virginia clings to a slim lead at Colonial as the Ben Hogan Collegiate heads into its final round.
FORT WORTH, Texas – The historic Colonial Country Club once again plays host to some of the nation’s best collegiate golfers as the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational heads into its final day. The tournament, created to honor Ben Hogan’s legacy and his record five victories at Colonial, has quickly become one of the premier fall events in college golf. Past champions and participants have gone on to PGA TOUR stardom, including Scottie Scheffler, Jordan Spieth, and Will Zalatoris.
Virginia set the pace on Monday, finishing as the only team under par through 36 holes. Senior Ben James was the Cavaliers’ standout, opening with a 67 before following it up with a steady 69. His 4-under total gave him a share of the individual lead alongside Texas Tech’s Connor Graham.
Teammate Josh Duangmanee surged early with a career-best-tying 67, but a tougher afternoon left him even-par and tied for eighth. Bryan Lee (2-over) and Paul Chang (5-over) rounded out Virginia’s strong start that positioned them three strokes clear of Texas Tech after two rounds.
As the final round gets underway at Colonial, Virginia continues to hold the top spot in the team standings at 1-under par, clinging to a narrow edge over Texas Tech (+2) and North Carolina (+3). The Cavaliers will need another poised performance to close out what would be a signature team win against a loaded national field.
On the individual side, James remains tied at the top with Graham, while Oklahoma’s Ryder Cowan (-3) and a pack of challengers including Keaton Vo (North Carolina), Wells Williams (Vanderbilt), and William Jennings (Alabama) lurk just two shots back. With Colonial’s demanding closing stretch, the leaderboard is far from settled.
For No. 20 Pepperdine, Willy Walsh has been the bright spot. The junior carded matching 70s on Monday and sits even-par, tied for eighth place. He’ll look to lock down a second straight top-10 finish. The Waves, at +14, are in 12th place but only a few strokes separate several teams in the middle of the pack.
Tuesday’s 18-hole finale will crown both the individual and team champions. With only seven players under par through two rounds and Colonial showing its teeth, expect plenty of movement on the leaderboard before the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational concludes.
