Joey Vrzich of La Jolla has etched his name into California golf history by securing victories in both the California Amateur Championship and the California State Open. His latest triumph came at the 125th California State Open, held at Bear Creek Golf Club, where he clinched the title after a tense two-hole playoff, finishing with an impressive 11-under-par over four rounds.
Vrzich's journey to this achievement began in 2020 when he captured the California Amateur Championship at Torrey Pines Golf Club. In a grueling 36-hole match play final, he defeated Charlie Reiter 3 and 2, showcasing his resilience and skill on one of the state's most challenging courses.
During his collegiate career at Pepperdine University, Vrzich was instrumental in leading the Waves to the 2021 NCAA team championship. His individual accolades include All-American honors and a career-high ranking of 22nd in the World Amateur Golf Ranking. Known for his aggressive play and low scoring, Vrzich set a course record with a 13-under 59 at Rams Hill Golf Club and holds a Nevada school record with a 10-under 61.
With these significant victories, Vrzich joins a prestigious group of golfers who have won both the California Amateur and the California State Open, solidifying his status as one of the state's premier talents.
