Final Four set at Women’s Amateur Championship

Defending champion Emily Toy (England) is joined by Annabell Fuller (England), Aline Krauter (Germany), and Emile Alba Paltrinieri(Italy) as the final four women standing at the Women’s Amateur Championship.

Toy, who has had a remarkable defense run after making match play on the cutline on Wednesday, advanced with a thrilling 19 hole victory over Lithuania’s Gile Bite Starkute.

Prior to the afternoon win, Toy needed all extra holes to move past Chloe Goadby (Scotland) to the quarterfinals. Winning the 18th thanks to a Goadby water ball, the two players halved the 19th before Toy grabbed the win on the 20th to set up the quarterfinals match with Stakute.

4 down through 10, Toy stormed back as she knocked in a tough up-and-down on the 18th before taking the win on the 19th.

Surviving 39 holes of golf on Friday, Toy faces Aline Krauter at 8:30 am local time as she looks to make it to the championship match to successfully defend her title.

“You have to stick around, not give your opponent anything or give away cheap holes,” Toy told the R&A. “It’s a case of digging in deep and my confidence levels then rose. After 39 holes, I’ll sleep well tonight!”

Coming off a win at the English Women’s Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship last week, Annabell Fuller continued her skilled birdie sniping with four birdies over her first seven holes against Elite Wight opponent Alessia Nobilio (Italy). Not going down without a fight, Nobilio earned wins on the back nine to bring the match back to all square on the 18th tee. Taking aim from 192-yards out in typical windy English conditions, Fuller put her approach to two-feet, netting her the win and a spot in the semifinals.

“That shot from 192 yards is one of the best of my career,” Fuller said. “I’ve had a few that have been important. It felt so good to do it. After being up on the back nine and then dropping a couple of shots, and then Alessia making a birdie two on the 17th, I felt on 18 I really needed to get it together. After she just missed the green with her third shot, I thought it might be my chance to get it close, and two feet kind of helped!”

Fuller faces another Italian in the semifinals as she takes on Emile Alba Paltrinieri.

Both matches are set to tee off before 9:00 am local time. 18 holes are set on the dockett before Sunday’s 36-hole title match.
