SAN JOSE, Calif. (Oct. 10, 2013) -- Walker Cup stars Max Homa and Justin Thomas have been invited to play in Frys.com Open on sponsor exemptions, according to Tournament Director Jeff Sanchez. Homa and Thomas, fresh off the U.S. Walker Cup victory over the Great Britain & Ireland team last weekend in New York, will make their professional debuts in the Frys.com Open. The $5,000,000 season opening PGA TOUR tournament will be played the week of October 7-13 at CordeValle Golf Club in San Martin. Homa starred for University of California, Berkeley in recent years, winning the NCAA Individual title this June in Atlanta. His Cal Bears were contenders for the National Championship after a record season of eleven wins in thirteen tournaments. Thomas and his teammates from the University of Alabama won the NCAA Championship with a victory over Illinois in the final match. They were runner-up to Texas for the 2012 title. The U.S. Team earned a 17-9 victory in the biennial, premier amateur team competition played at historic National Golf Links in Southampton, N.Y., site of the first Walker Cup Matches in 1922. Other former NCAA Individual Champions expected to compete at the Fry’s sponsored tournament are John Peterson (2011), Scott Langley (2010), Kevin Chappell (2008), Jamie Lovemark (2007), Ryan Moore (2004), Troy Matteson (2002), Charles Howell III (2000), Justin Leonard (1994) and Scott Verplank (1986). The tournament has six additional sponsor exemptions to award. Open qualifying for four places in the 132 player field will be held on October 7 at Bayonet Golf Course in Seaside. Entries from PGA TOUR players close on October 4.
