About Four-Ball amateur golf

Four-ball is amateur golf at its most social and strategic: two-player teams where each golfer plays their own ball and the team takes the better score on every hole. It rewards a complementary partnership — one player can attack while the other plays safe — and it produces some of the most exciting team finishes in the amateur game.

The schedule below is pulled live from our tournament database, so it always reflects the four-ball (and best-ball) events currently open across the country. Find your next team event, then read on for how to win at four-ball and what separates a good partnership from a great one.

Frequently asked questions

What is four-ball golf?

Four-ball is a team format where two players each play their own ball, and the team's score on each hole is the better of the two. It's often called "best ball."

How is four-ball different from foursomes or scramble?

In four-ball each player plays their own ball the whole way. Foursomes (alternate shot) has partners sharing one ball; a scramble has the team play from the best of both shots each time.

Do both partners need a handicap?

For most amateur four-ball championships, yes — each player needs an established USGA Handicap Index, and many events set a combined-team or per-player maximum.

How do I find a four-ball partner?

State and regional golf associations often maintain partner-matching lists for team events. Entering as a complete team also tends to secure your spot faster than entering solo.
