Course expectations
Old Del Monte's classic inland Monterey layout demands smart course management with pinched fairways, doglegs that ask you to pick a side, and small greens where bad approach angles rarely yield easy pars.
Weather risk
December conditions in Monterey can bring cool mornings, soft light, and occasional frost delays—recent editions have seen lightning-fast greens and firm turf that reward precision.

San Juan Oaks' 2024 renovation reduced bunkers from 62 to 26, rebuilt greens for predictable roll, and upgraded irrigation for firm December conditions—rewarding precise angles and ground-game creativity over raw power. The flipped nines now open with a dramatic climb into the hills, setting up downhill tee shots and strategic approach demands.

The tournament's recent history shows that Pacific Grove rewards both local knowledge and Sunday charges—winners have closed with low rounds of 64 (Mitchell Hoey in 2025, Jerry Ledzinski in 2026) to separate from tight fields, suggesting that aggressive play on the exposed back nine is often the difference-maker.
