In one of the most dramatic finishes of the college golf season, Drew Zielinski outdueled his teammate and roommate Bennett McNabb to claim medalist honors at the Golfweek Fripp Island to Bermuda Invitational — a win that not only secured him a title but also made history.
Zielinski’s victory earned him an exemption into the PGA Tour’s Butterfield Bermuda Championship (Nov. 13–16), making him the first active NCAA Division II player ever to receive a PGA Tour invitation. The Lee University senior will also become the third player in school history to compete in a PGA Tour event, following in the footsteps of alumni MJ Daffue and Beck Burnette.
After setting a course record with a 7-under 65 in the opening round, Zielinski stumbled in the afternoon with a 76, setting up a tense final-day showdown. On Tuesday, he was flawless — no bogeys, four birdies, and a decisive three-birdie streak to close at 11-under 207, two shots clear of McNabb.
“It’s what you dream about,” said Lee coach Evan Spence. “You recruit players hoping they’ll win, but seeing one of your own earn a PGA Tour start — that’s special. His finish today was as clutch as it gets.”
Lee University also dominated the team event, finishing 25-under and winning by a commanding 18 strokes over Georgia Southwestern.
For Zielinski, the performance was about more than just a trophy.
“I’m just going to soak in this moment and look forward to what’s next,” he said. “I tried to stay in the present, one shot at a time — and it worked.”
With his spot in Bermuda confirmed, Zielinski now carries not only his school’s banner but also the hopes of every small-program golfer dreaming of a shot at the big stage.
