Winegardner wins Maryland Senior Am with two shots to spare

Tom Winegardner won the Maryland Senior Amateur at Talbot Country Club after an eagle on the back nine

EASTON, Md. (Sept. 13, 2018) – Tom Winegardner is the Maryland Senior Amateur champion after finishing two shots clear of the field at Talbot Country Club. Chalk it up to a final-round eagle at the par-5 14th.

Winegardner got off to a powerful start in the first round with a 4-under 68. That included six birdies and two bogeys. It left Winegardner, who advanced to the second round of match play at the U.S. Senior Amateur last month, with a one-shot lead on Pete Hiskey entering the final round.

Thursday was a rough day for both competitors, but Winegardner managed to hold on just tight enough to win the title. Thanks in large part to the eagle, Winegardner had a second-round 3-over 75 to finish at 1 under. He was the only player to finish 36 holes under par. Hiskey, meanwhile, backed up his opening 69 with a 78. At 3 over, Hiskey found himself in fourth.

Kevin Allis was runner-up to Winegardner with rounds of 74-71. He had the best score in the final round, but it still left him 1 over for the tournament.

Lee Flemister was third at 2 over after rounds of 74-72. Tom Grem, the winner in 2016 tied for fifth at 4 over.
