BEMIDJI, Minn. (September 1, 2014) — Tom Jenkins of Champlin, Minn. successfully defended his title at the Vandersluis Memorial. He shot the tournament's only round in the 60's — a 69 — on Labor Day to blow nine shots ahead of the field for a huge margin of victory.
Jenkins opened the three-day event with a two-under par 70 at Bemidji Town and Country Club on Saturday, leading the field by one shot over eventual second-round co-leader Tyler Hill. Jenkins and Hill shared the second-round lead at 141 but Hill faltered on Monday, shooting 79 and falling back into a tie for third.
Taking second place was Chad Skarperud of Fargo, N.D. He shot 73 on Monday after rounds of 75 and 70 over the weekend. He finished one stroke ahead of Hill and Chris Curb in third place.
This year's event is the 47th running, having many notable past champions including 1996 British Open winner and successful PGA TOUR player Tom Lehman, who is a native of Minnesota.
