Monterey Headlines the Week — Match Play Drama at the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur

The Dunes Course at Monterey Peninsula Country Club once again proved that beauty on the coast comes with a bite.

Two familiar names — Katherine Zhu of San Jose and Jessica Spicer of Virginia — shared medalist honors at three-under after stroke play. But once the match-play brackets began, form went out the window.

Former champions Ina Kim-Schaad and Kelsey Chugg squared off in a rematch worthy of the weekend, with Kim-Schaad surviving 1-up. Spicer’s run ended early against Kirsty Hodgkins-Redner, while local member Lara Tennant thrilled home fans by advancing in extra holes.

The Round of 32 tees off this morning, followed by the Round of 16 this afternoon. Spectators are welcome at the Dunes Course, and full brackets are available through LIVE SCORING →.
