Texas takes Big 12 Match Play Championship

After downing No. 2 Oklahoma State in the semifinals, Longhorns dispose of Texas Tech in the championship match

There aren't too many events the Texas men's golf program hasn't won in its long and storied history, but the Big 12 Match Play Tournament was one of them -- until today.

The Longhorns secured their first Big 12 Match Play title on Wednesday at The Club at Houston Oaks, defeating Texas Tech, 3-2-1 in the championship match.

Earlier in the day, the No. 3 seeded Longhorns tied Oklahoma, 3-3 to clinch Pool B with 10 points while Texas Tech advanced to the championship match with a 3-1-2 win over No. 1 Oklahoma to capture Pool A with 12 points and reach the finals for the second time in program history.

The Longhorns got victories from Mason Nome (3 and 2), Cole Hammer (3 and 2) and Pierceson Coody (2 and 1), while Parker Coody halved his match to take down the Red Raiders on the par 71, 7,001-yard course located in Hockley, Texas.

The Longhorns posted a 4-0-1 mark during the three-day tournament while Pierceson Coody and Nome each registered perfect 5-0-0 individual match play records during the week.

No. 1 seed Oklahoma took down No. 2 seed Oklahoma State 5-1-0 to claim third place and No. 6 seed TCU earned a 4-2-0 victory against No. 5 seed Kansas to win fifth place. No. 10 seed Iowa State beat No. 8 seed West Virginia 5-1-0 to grab seventh place while No. 7 seed Baylor won a 4-2-0 matchup against No. 9 seed Kansas State to finish ninth.
