Susan West Successfully Defends Alabama Women's Senior Title

Defending champion Susan West of Tuscaloosa led wire-to-wire to win her second Alabama Women’s State Senior Amateur title

CALERA, AL (April 22, 2016) - Defending champion Susan West of Tuscaloosa led wire-to-wire to win her second Alabama Women’s State Senior Amateur title. West’s final round even par 71 coupled with previous rounds of 74-71 added to a three-over 216 total and an eleven shot victory over three-time champion Martha Lang of Birmingham.

“Martha was tough today and she pushed me to step up my play”, West said. “She's such a delight and a gracious competitor”.

West went on to say, “Glory to God and I am humbled to be around so many people that inspired me over the years. I still remember my very first tournament twelve-years-ago playing with the late Quida Cunningham and Jean Miller. They were so encouraging and remember saying that “I want to play in the championship flight one day” and they were honest by saying "you can…you just gotta play better!”

Tournament division was divided into five flights by score for the final round. Flight winners included:

First Flight: Sarah Vandervoort, Montgomery (229)

Second Flight: Melanie Smith, Hoover (245)

Third Flight: Essie McGhee, Montgomery (270)

Fourth Flight: Lisa Jones, Guntersville (266)

Fifth Flight: Sharon Alexander, Millbrook (286)

Linda Burns of Decatur took home the Super Senior title with a two-day total of 181 that was three shots clear of Avonne Shelton of Decatur. The Super Senior division was a 36-hole event.
