Sill and Hargett broke away from the pack with rounds of 70 and 69, respectively. Sill set the tone early with a fabulous 33 on the front nine. He made birdies on holes 2, 5, 7, and 8. The only blemish was a bogey on the fourth hole.
However, Hargett's 35, including birdies on the second and eighth holes, helped him keep touch with Sill. He still trailed by three shots, but that lead began to evaporate when Sill made back-to-back bogeys on the 12th and 13th holes and Hargett played holes 10-13 in even par.
The game was on. Hargett only trailed by one shot with five holes to play.
Sill and Hargett traded birdies on the 16th hole; two pars on the 17th left Hargett with one hole to make up the one shot deficit.
He did it in style. Sill made a par while Hargett birdied the long par five to punctuate a closing 34 and force a playoff.
After an 18 hole battle, Sill added one more birdie to his day's collection and claimed the South Carolina Senior Championship.
“I didn’t mess up too much today,” Sill to the SCGA after the round. “I stayed in it pretty much all day long, I got it done and I got lucky.
Sill managed to keep cool during the pressure packed final round. "I always stay calm, do the best I can, keep going and have some good breaks, which I had plenty of those," Sill said. "It always feels good to win a golf tournament and it feels wonderful to be the 64th SCGA Senior Champion.”
