Six amateurs advance to final stage of LPGA Qualifying Series

Vivian and Yu-Sang Hou, sisters on the University of Arizona women's golf team, were two of six collegians who advanced to the final stage of the LPGA Q-Series after finishing in the top-70 of week one this weekend at the RTJ Magnolia Grove Crossings and Falls Courses in Mobile, Ala.

Joining the Hou's next weekend at Highland Oaks Golf Club in Dothan, Ala. will be Brooke Matthews of Arkansas, Gina Kim of Duke, Beatrice Wallin of Florida State and Karen Fredgaard of Houston.

The Hou sisters were well within the cutline and are currently tied for 29th at 5-under 281. Vivian, a finalist at the U.S. Women's Amateur last summer, carded rounds of 69-72-68-72 while her sister answered with rounds of 71-72-72-66.

Matthews, who opened the 2021 fall season with a record-setting performance at the Cougar Classic in Hanahan, South Carolina where she broke the 54-hole scoring record with a 29-under 191 performance, is tied for 42nd at 2-under 284 on rounds of 71-73-70-70.

Duke senior Gina Kim, a Curtis Cup team member, is also onto Dothan in 52nd place at even par 286 (70-72-71-73).

Florida State's Beatrice Wallin and Houston's Karen Fredgaard were part of a group that is tied for 62nd at 1-over 287, which was one-shot inside the cutline.

The leader after week one is Pauline Roussin-Bouchard of France, who recently turned pro after a stellar college career at the University of South Carolina. In second is Hye-Jin Choi of Korea, who in 2017 nearly became the first amateur in 50 years to win the U.S. Women's Amateur.

After two stages of qualifying, a total of 110 players advanced to the Q-Series, which is a pair of 72-hole tournaments held in consecutive weeks in Alabama. The top-70 players (and ties) from week one in Mobile advanced to the final weekend of qualifying next weekend at Highland Oaks in Dothan.

The cumulative scores from those combined 144 holes will determine the 45 players to earn LPGA status for the new season. Players finishing outside the top 20 and ties will also receive 2022 Symetra Tour status.
