Scarlett Schremmer wins Southern Women’s Amateur in playoff

The Miami sophomore showed poise late, draining a birdie on the second playoff hole to edge Coastal Carolina freshman Alana Kutt

Scarlett Schremmer had to work for this one.

The Miami sophomore from Birmingham, Ala., captured the Southern Women’s Amateur Championship at Savannah Golf Club in Savannah, Ga., defeating Coastal Carolina freshman Alana Kutt in a playoff after both players finished at 1-under 215.

Schremmer posted rounds of 71-69-75, while Kutt carded 72-72-71. Kutt made five birdies in the final round to climb into a share of the lead, while Schremmer had to steady herself after opening with a double bogey. She answered with birdies on Nos. 2 and 4, then managed the back nine well enough to stay tied at the top.

The playoff went back to the 18th hole. After both players made par on the first extra hole, they played 18 again. Schremmer missed left off the tee but recovered brilliantly, punching a low runner to six feet. Kutt found the fairway bunker, came up short, then pitched close for par. Schremmer made the birdie putt to win.

Raegan Denton of Australia, an incoming LSU freshman, finished third at even-par 216 and earned Low Junior honors.

Schremmer’s résumé already includes two Augusta National Women’s Amateur starts, a win at the Alabama Women’s Amateur, and appearances for the United States in the Junior Solheim Cup.
