Roam takes down past champs to win West Virginia Mid-Am

Cam Roam cruised through the bracket from the No. 9 seed to win the title.

Cam Roam walked away as the winner at the West Virginia Mid-Amateur after navigating one round of stroke play then five rounds of match play at Pete Dye Golf Club in Bridgeport, W.Va.

Roam took the No. 9 seed on the bracket after finishing as part of a tie for eighth with Nick Biesecker in the stroke-play qualifying round. From there, Roam began a path to the final that included a few key breaks. It began quickly enough with a 6-and-5 defeat of No. 25-seeded Jeff Harper in the opening round, but that set up a Round-of-16 match with five-time champion Sam O’Dell.

After five holes, the match with O’Dell ended in a forfeit. In the quarterfinals, top-seeded Pat Carter awaited, but Roam slipped past him by a 5-and-3 margin. Carter has won this event seven times dating to 2004.

Close wins over Jess Ferrell and Woody Woodward in the final two match-ups left Roam with the title.
