Miles McConnell of Tampa, Fla., made the most of a disrupted opening round, firing a 6-under 64 to take a three-shot lead at the Sunnehanna Senior Amateur Championship at Sunnehanna Country Club.
McConnell’s round matched the tournament’s 18-hole scoring record, first set by Sean Knapp in 2023, and gave the three-time Florida Senior Amateur Player of the Year from 2021 through 2023 early control of the shortened championship.
The opening round was completed after heavy rain forced play to be suspended the previous day, with players returning to finish their rounds on a softened A.W. Tillinghast layout.
Jason Pridmore of Ventura, Calif., sits alone in second after a 3-under 67. The former professional motorcycle racer trails McConnell by three shots entering the final round.
Three players share third at 2-under 68: Michael Anderson of Novi, Mich., Tripp Davis of Edmond, Okla., and Buddy Bryant of Lexington, Ky.
With the championship reduced from 54 holes to 36, McConnell’s opening 64 carries even greater weight. There is now little room for recovery, and his three-shot cushion gives him a clear advantage heading into the final round.
