Much of super senior golf can be about chasing elusive titles. For Frank Pieper, who plays out of Monterey Peninsula Country Club, that quest ended on Tuesday when he won the NCGA Super Senior Amateur. Pieper is a former NCGA Super Senior Match Play winner.
For Pieper, the son of amateur legend Ernie Pieper, it’s his fourth career NCGA crown. He also won the NCGA Senior Four-Ball crown in 2014 playing with Mike Staskus.
To get the title, Pieper, 69, had rounds of 68-72 at Merced (Calif.) Golf and Country Club for a 4-under total. Pieper’s final day was all about consistency, to the tune of 10 pars coming down the stretch. Runners-up Jeff Burda, who won this title last year in his debut, and Herb Jensen couldn’t throw enough firepower to catch him.
Burda could’ve tied Pieper in regulation but missed a 6-foot birdie putt on the par-5 18th leaving him with a 71. Just moments earlier, Pieper’s 20-foot birdie try had lipped out.
“It means a lot to me,” Pieper told the NCGA. “It’s a big tournament and a good start to the new (points) year.”
