Nate Vance stays steady in GCAA Am Series win

One Cyclone picks up a win as the fall season comes to a close

Iowa State transfer Nate Vance has yet to tee it up for the Cyclones but he has already picked up a win. Vance found an opportunity to get some live reps in against collegiate competition at the Golf Coaches Association of America’s Amateur Series stop at Maumelle, Arkansas. The two day, 54-hole event was played in chilly but scorable conditions at Maumelle Country Club. Vance used rounds of 72 and 68 to take a share of the lead alongside University of Tulsa women’s golfer Lorena Tseng who pulled a true 180 Saturday, posting 75-65 to hold a third of the lead. As the trio finished the final round on Sunday, it was Vance whose steady play was rewarded with a victory. Tseng, one of two women to finish in the top five (Lilly Thomas; Tulsa), the Golden Hurricane fell off the pace with a 3-over 45 back nine to finish at 1-under 215. A native of Taiwan, Tseng wrapped the tournament up with a second-place finish. As for Vance, his final round was relatively stress free. Beginning his day with a birdie on No. 1, Vance tallied seven straight pars before dropping a bogey on No. 9. Even on the day and remaining four under for the tournament, Vance picked up birdies on Nos. 14 and 15 to give himself a plentiful lead with just three to play. Luckily for Vance, the lead that was built was needed in a smaller capacity. Making bogeys on Nos. 17 and 18, Vance’s lead went from six to four as he closed out Sunday with an even-par 72 and the win. As the fall semester comes to a close, Vance will look to take the momentum gained from the win into the spring season for the Cyclones.
