Not quite a year ago,
Heath Myers won the Oklahoma Mid-Amateur in a playoff. Myers has another title to his name after bookending a week at the Oklahoma Golf Association Stroke Play Championship with rounds of 2-under 68. It was enough to earn Myers a three-shot victory in the state championship.
Myers, of Kingfisher, Okla., had two bogeys in his opening 68 at Oak Tree Country Club, and two double bogeys over the next 36 holes. He had 10 birdies on the week. The last round was a horserace.
Myers started the final round with a one-shot lead on Carson Tewell, but when Tewell birdied his opening two holes, he pulled ahead. Tewell, who just completed his freshman season at Stetson, added two more birdies in the next four holes, but so did Myers.
After Tewell made the turn in 5-under 30, he fell to a back-nine 40, which gave Myers the opportunity to pull away with his back-nine 36. The back nine at Oak Tree – particularly the final six holes – is notoriously difficult.
Myers, a 35-year-old businessman, will try for a trifecta later this summer in the OGA State Amateur Championship.
