ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. (Dec. 22, 2018) – It has been a week of uncharacteristic weather in the Southeast. Cold and strong, gusting winds swept through the region, wreaking havoc on the amateur-golf schedule. The Jones Cup Junior, in its 10th year, was reduced from 54 holes to 18 holes. Drew Miller came out on top in the one-day shootout at Sea Island Golf Club’s Seaside Course.
Miller, a high-school junior who lives in Memphis, Tenn., began his day at No. 6 in the shotgun start. He had a streak of four birdies to start the day before making five birdies on the back nine, including three in a row from Nos. 13-15. The only hiccup for Miller came at the par-4 fourth, where he made double bogey, but it wasn’t enough to cost him the tournament. He finished with 1-under 69 to win by one.
Miller will play for Ole Miss in the fall of 2020.
Behind Miller, John DuBois carded an even-par 70 that also included a double bogey on the front nine (No. 5). DuBois plays high school golf for the First Academy in Orlando, Fla., and won this year’s 1A state individual title.
In fact, Miller won that title in a playoff over fellow Orlando resident Canon Claycomb (Circle Christian), who was part of a six-way tie for fourth with a 3-over 73 at the Sea Island.
