MiLL SPRING, N.C. — A bogey-free 68 on day two at Bright's Creek Golf Club pushed Matt Crenshaw of Burlington, N.C. to a three-shot lead entering the final round of the 22nd North Carolina Mid-Amateur Championship.
The former UNC golfer, during the early 2000s, trailed first-round leader and defending champion Joe Jaspers of Huntersville by a stroke after day one. Though Jaspers carded a respectable even-par 72 in the second round, he finds himself now down by three and tied with Greg Earnhardt for second place.
Just a year ago, Jaspers edged 2014 U.S. Mid-Amateur champion Scott Harvey for the title. He'll have to earn it tomorrow if he wants to defend.
Earnhardt's 68, which included six birdies, tied Crenshaw for the lowest score of the day, and puts him in the final group alongside Jaspers entering Sunday.
Rounding out the players under par through 36 holes are Steven Brame Henderson and Paul Tucker of Waxhaw, who are at 2-under and 1-under, respectively.
