Mark Plummer Wins his 5th Maine Senior Amateur

FALMOUTH, ME (August 23, 2017) - Mark Plummer (Augusta CC) got off to a rocky start during the second round of the Maine Senior Amateur Championship, but used his years of championship experience to fight back and eventually win the event for a record fifth time. He outlasted defending champion Ron Dery (Biddeford-Saco) to win the championship by two strokes. Plummer was the only player to break par at Falmouth CC in the second round with a 71 (-1) to pair with his opening 73 yesterday at The Woodlands Club to finish even par for the 36-hole event. Plummer was three over par through four holes today, but birdied three in a row on holes 7 to 9 to get back to even par for his round at the turn. He still trailed Dery by one at the turn, but added birdies on 11 and 13 to take the lead for the first time. It stayed a two-man race for most of the back nine, with Plummer dropping his only shot of the side on 16. Dery three-putted the same hole to remain one back and followed with another bogey on 17 to ultimately end his chances. Both players finished with pars on 18. Dan Falcone (Riverside GC) came in third place overall with a two-day total of 147 (+3). Rounding out the top five were Tom Bean (Augusta CC) at 148, followed by Mike Nowak (Augusta CC) and overnight leader Cash Wiseman (Falmouth CC) at 149. Day One Notes: Cash Wiseman is one of the youngest players in the field at this year’s Maine Senior Amateur Championship, and finds himself with a one shot lead after today’s first round. The 56-year-old from Falmouth carded four birdies against four bogeys in his opening round at The Woodlands Club to shot an even-par 72 to take the early lead.
