Lau Jen Wen uses hot back 9 for Orlando Int'l Women's Am lead

The Michigan freshman had five birdies on the back nine at Orange County National to take a one-shot advantage

ORLANDO, Fla. (Jan. 3, 2018) – It took Ashley Lau Jen Wen a few holes to warm up, but once she did it was lights out at Orange County National on Thursday. The Michigan freshman had five birdies on the back nine, and combined with one bogey on the front, posted a 4-under 68 on the Panther Lakes Course for a one-shot lead.

Lau Jen Win had one top-10 finish in her fall season. It came on the heels of a 13th at the Asian Games and a sixth at the Malaysian Ladies Amateur Open. Lau Jen Win hails from Malaysia.

She also played the U.S. Girls’ Junior over the summer, making match play, and won the FCG International Junior Championship. As a junior, Lau Jen Win contended in events all over the world, also winning the RSGC Junior Amateur Open.

Louisville teammates Olivia Cason and Lauren Hartlage posted rounds of 3-under 69 and trail Lau Jen Win by a shot in the 54-hole event. Hartlage was bogey-free. Cason qualified for the U.S. Women’s Open this summer.

Michigan State’s Haylin Harris had a 70 and is fourth, and Kentucky’s Leonie Bettel, with 1-under 71, was the only other player to finish the first round under par.
