Karis Davidson is among Australian Women's Amateur Semifinalist

VICTORIA, Australia (January 21, 2017) -- The last step proved a doozy, but Queenslander Karis Davidson has made the semifinals of the women’s Australian Amateur Championship, presented by Swinging Skirts. Davidson was seemingly cruising at 5 up with five to play against Ga-young Lee, but the knockout blow took a long while to land. Davidson made bogeys on the 14th, 15th and 16th and suddenly found the tension rising against the Korean who set the tournament alight with a course-record 63 on Tuesday at nearby Kingswood. And when Lee rolled in a birdie on the 17th, the 2016 Australian Girls’ Amateur champ really felt the pinch. “When she holed it, I was like, `This is it, I have to do this’,” Davidson said. “I had a good read and just had to do it. “I was wondering what I was doing (with) a few bogeys, but the 17th hole was really good.” Davidson will face medallist and world No. 4 Hye-jin Choi in the first semi, while an all Korean second semi will feature Hyun-kyung Park – a 5&4 winner over Chantelle Cassidy – and surprise packet So-mi Lee. Lee took down compatriot and reigning U.S. Women’s Amateur champ Eun Jeong Seong 3&2 to advance. The women’s semifinals will be played Saturday afternoon.
