In Iowa, Jack Evans wins the Lake Creek Amateur

The COVID-19 pandemic could not stop the Lake Creek Amateur from returning after a seven-year hiatus. The tournament, held at Buena Vista University Golf Course in Storm Lake, Iowa -- just an hour east of Sioux City if you're wondering -- played host to 97 amateurs from around the region. After 36-holes a champion was yet to be named as John Spellerberg, Jack Evans, and Jonny Douglas were tied for first with a two-day total of even-par 144. Douglas, a soon to be senior at Morningside College and a Newcastle Upon Tyne, England native fired rounds of 70 and 74. Spellerberg, a Nebraska native and former Creighton University golfer posted 69-75 as windy weather on Sunday sent the leaders' scores north of par. Evans, a soon to be senior on the Sioux Falls University golf team mirrored Spellerberg’s scores. Evans snuck his way into the playoff after getting up and down from a short-sided lie behind the green on No. 18. Heading back to No. 18, Evans found himself looking straight downwind at a 167 yard approach shot. He hit a 50-degree wedge, setting up a chance for birdie. With the other two players having gimme par putts, Evans holed a 20-foot bender to win the tournament right in front of the clubhouse. “It was probably the best stroke I’d hit all day. About 10 feet from the hole I knew it was going in,” said Evans in an AmateurGolf.com interview. “From the second we teed off on the opening hole to the final putt in the playoff that was a battle with all three of the guys,” he continued. “It was an up and down day to say the least.”
