A successful charity golf tournament may appear simple to the golfers' participation: Register, arrive at the course, play a round, and support a worthy cause.
Behind the scenes, however, organizers are managing registrations, sponsors, fundraising opportunities, event logistics, and countless details that must come together before the first tee shot is hit.
In the latest episode of the AmateurGolf.com Podcast, host McKenzie Steenson speaks with Jake Ferreira, co-founder and executive director of the Hope Strengthens Foundation, about the organization’s mission, its longstanding connection to golf and how GolfStatus has helped its team manage events and raise more money for the people it serves.
What is GolfStatus?
GolfStatus is a golf event management and fundraising platform designed to help charities, companies and tournament organizers manage their events in one place.
For the Hope Strengthens Foundation, that includes making it easier for golfers to register, helping sponsors become involved, providing additional fundraising opportunities and simplifying the administrative work required to plan and execute a tournament.
Ferreira said the platform has made life considerably easier for a small organization with limited staff and a significant mission.
“It’s such a wonderful platform to help people sign up, to help get sponsors engaged, to have some enhancement programs that are associated with the platform that allow you to raise some more resources,” Ferreira said.
Just as importantly, the relationship extends beyond the technology. Ferreira highlighted the availability of the GolfStatus team when questions arise or the foundation wants to explore a new idea.
“If we have a technical question or a logistics question or want to try something, their staff is always available to help you think through those things,” he said.
That combination of technology and personal support allows the foundation to spend less time managing administrative details and more time creating a strong experience for golfers, sponsors and supporters.

A Foundation Built Around Hope and Strength
The Hope Strengthens Foundation began in 2010 when Ferreira and a group of friends came together to support their friend Joe during his battle with cancer.
What started as a community fundraiser quickly demonstrated the power of bringing people together around someone in need. After Joe successfully beat cancer, the group formalized the organization, naming it after the two words that helped inspire him throughout his battle: hope and strength.
Today, the foundation supports individuals and families dealing with serious illness, disability or injury. Its work includes helping cover medical bills, transportation, food and other out-of-pocket expenses related to care.
The organization has also formed partnerships with hospital patient-service programs, allowing social workers and care teams to direct assistance toward patients who need it most. Scholarship programs established with universities in the Northeast support students pursuing careers as nurses, social workers and healthcare professionals.
Golf Becomes Part of the Mission
Golf entered the foundation’s fundraising strategy early. After a Boston Marathon fundraiser, its second major event was a charity golf outing.
The response from the community helped establish an event that has now been held for 14 years. Over the past several years, GolfStatus has helped the foundation build upon that tradition while improving the experience for organizers, sponsors and participants.
The partnership also supports newer events, including the HSF Cup, a red-versus-blue team competition returning Oct. 5.
The inaugural HSF Cup came down to the final match, the final hole and the final putt, with the blue team claiming the trophy. This year, GolfStatus-provided pin flags will recognize the defending champions with blue framing around each flag—giving the red team a reminder of last year’s result every time it approaches a green.
Beyond the friendly competition, the HSF Cup represents what has powered the foundation from the beginning: using golf to rally a community around a larger purpose.
