That’s when Holley and Sherlin turned it on.
The past champs fired a back-nine, 6-under 30 to overtake two teams on the leaderboard. Sherlin holed a 5-foot birdie on the difficult 430-yard, par-4 18th that turned out to be the championship winning putt. It put the finishing touches on a final-round 64 and got Holley and Sherlin to 19 under for the weekend.
Sherlin said the victory was unexpected, knowing the caliber of players they had to chase down.
“When we got on 18 we knew we were tied. We were like, ‘Let’s go make this happen,’ and we did,” Sherlin said.
Steve Hudson and Claud Cooper, both of Birmingham, played behind Holley and Sherlin in Sunday’s final group. Standing in the 18th fairway, Hudson and Cooper realized they would need a birdie to force a playoff. Cooper hit his approach to 5 feet but his birdie putt just slipped by the edge of the hole, leaving the pair with a final-round 67 and at 18 under total, one shot short of the title.
Robert Nelson and Walker Grant, who shared the second-round lead with Hudson and Cooper, carded a final-round 68 to finish in third place at 17-under 199.
In the Super Senior Division, Tommy Williams and Lamar Hart posted a final-round 67 for a six-stroke victory over John Gibbs and John Daniel.
