Georgia Tech rolls Duke to take the Cypress Point Classic

At one of the most inspiring places in golf, the Yellow Jackets roll to a 3-0 record

6th-ranked Georgia Tech made quick work of fellow ACC rival Duke in the championship match of the Cypress Point Classic, winning five of the six matches at the venerable Cypress Point Club on the Monterey Peninsula.

For the Yellow Jackets, it was a third straight win over a highly-ranked opponent.

How hot were they? In 18 individual matches over two days, they only lost one. Against Duke, four of the six players finished their Duke opponents by the 14th hole.

Among them was the U.S. Amateur champion Andy Ogletree, who took down Quinn Riley 5 and 4. Ben Smith, a redshirt freshman, defeated QiWen Wong 6 and 4. It was the third straight match win for both Ogletree and Smith over the two days.

Noah Norton also recorded a 5 and 4 win, over Steven DiLisio, and when Luke Schniederjans closed out Chandler Eaton 3 and 2, it clinched the title for Georgia Tech.

Tyler Strafaci prevailed in the final match of the day, 2 and 1 over Evan Katz, in the only match that made it as far as the 17th hole.

For the Yellow Jackets, it was sweet revenge after watching Duke celebrate on their home course two weeks ago, when they won the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate Invitational.

In the third-place match, UCLA topped the tournament hosts Stanford 4-2, while Illinois beat Alabama 5-1 in the fifth-place match. In the seventh-place match, Cal beat USC 5.5-0.5.

The unique format of the Cypress Point Classic featured a four-ball in the first round of matches, an alternate shot in the second round, and singles in the final round.

Cypress Point is an Alister Mackenzie design and one of the most inspiring places in golf. The par-3 16th is one of the most famous holes in the game, and the course played host to the Bing Crosby National Pro-Am as well as "The Match" (Byron Nelson and Ben Hogan vs. Ken Venturi and Harvie Ward) that was part of the inspiration for this tournament.
