Fredrick fires 9-under 62 for commanding MO Senior lead

Wayne Fredrick had three eagles in his opening 62 at Westwood Hills Country Club and easily leads the Missouri Senior

POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. (Sept. 17, 2018) – Wayne Fredrick didn’t have too many pars on his card Monday in the opening round of the Missouri Senior Amateur. Fredrick’s day started out normal enough, with a bogey on the first hole, but from there, things got interesting. Fredrick made his first of three eagles on the par-5 second and didn’t look back from there.

Fredrick, of Springfield, Mo., ended his day at Westwood Hills Country Club with a back-nine 29 for an opening 62. It was good for a six-shot lead. Nobody else in the field could keep pace with what Fredrick was doing out front.

After the eagle at No. 2, Fredrick had another bogey at No. 3, but it was his last for the day. He had three birdies to close the front nine, then had two more birdies and two eagles on the back.

It’s not too much of a surprise that no one else is close to Fredrick after the opening round. Harry Roberts had a 3-under 68 to land in second and Brian Haskell is third at 2-under 69. Both golfers are from St. Joseph, Mo.

Four players are tied for fourth with 1-under 70, and the rest of the field is at even par or higher. The foursome at 1 under includes Steve Groom, who plays a national senior schedule and tied for 18th at the 2017 British Senior Amateur. Don Bliss, Timothy Holmes and Bill Anderson are also on that number.

Defending champion Jay Gregory is T-13 after an opening 2-under 73.
