Courington wins first Kansas Mid-Am wire-to-wire

Jack Courington held onto his first-round lead to win the Kansas Mid-Amateur on Tuesday

WICHITA, Kan. (Oct. 16, 2018) – Jack Courington’s first-round lead shrank Tuesday in the second round of the Kansas Mid-Amateur, but the Wichita native still came out on top. Courington’s final-round, even-par 72 at Crestview Country Club was enough to leave him with the title.

Courington’s opening 4-under 68 gave him a comfortable cushion entering the second and final round. But when Corey Novascone, also of Wichita, made two birdies on the back to get to 2-under 70 for the day, suddenly the race was a lot tighter. Courington ended up winning by a single shot with his 4-under total for 36 holes.

For the 29-year-old Courington, the win represents his first state mid-amateur title. Courington played college golf for Missouri State, was a U.S. Amateur qualifier in 2008 and won the Kansas Amateur Stroke Play Championship in 2012 and 2015.

Novascone, meanwhile, is a past Kansas Amateur champion and a Crestview CC member.

Lawrence's Kit Grove took third and Wichita's Tyler Chapman finished in fourth. Elliot Soyez, Spencer Christian and Bradley Lane tied for fifth place.
