NEWTON, Kan. (July 19, 2014) -- Byron Meth defeated Doug Ghim in 37 holes to win the 2014 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship Saturday at Sand Creek Station Golf Course.
Meth, who plays at Pacific, went back and forth with Ghim, a rising soon-to-be freshman at the University of Texas. The pair traded off victories throughout the the morning round before Meth went 2-up early in the second 18.
Meth went on to maintain that 2-up advantage and grew it to 3-up on No. 8.
Ghim battled back, though to make it all square on the 30th hole and forced the playoff, which Meth won with a bogey on the par-4 first.
Meth had defeated Jess Bonneau Friday to reach the finale after sharing medalist honors with three others, including Ghim.
Ghim defeated local favorite Michael Gellerman Friday to move on to Saturday's championship.
