Matt Burroughs has been having himself a stellar year on the golf course. Coming fresh off an appearance at the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship, earning his way there with medalist honors as his qualifying site in Connecticut, he entered the New Hampshire Mid-Amateur with his best game.
Following his win, Burroughs comments on today’s round saying, “I started off well, I birdied number one which is always nice to get off to a good start. Will (McLaughlin) and Jim (Cilley), I’ve played with both of them a lot, they’re both good players so it was nice to get some momentum.”
He remained consistent throughout the entire week. He made four birdies each day and managed to keep his bogeys to a minimum. Despite his double bogey on the par-4 10th hole, he held onto the solo lead after his birdie on the first hole. He finished the day at 1-under 69, the same as Round 2.
His knowledge of the course and consistency truly helped him succeed this week. He states, “Before the week, I thought 210 would be a good score, even par. I play here a lot; the greens are tough, and it gets people frustrated. I kind of get used to not making a lot of putts out here.”
Throughout the final round, there were a number of players trying to chase down Burroughs. There ended up being a three-way tie for second play between Brett Wilson (The Golf Club of New England) and two Concord Country Club members, Fletcher Sokul and Will McLaughlin. All three finished the tournament at a respectable three-over par. Wilson’s final two rounds of the tournament were both under-par, but unfortunately his opening round 75 (+5) put him just out of reach.
Jim Cilley (Pembroke Pines CC), who was one of the two leaders following the each of the first two rounds, fell down the leaderboard a little in the final round, shooting five-over par 75 in the final round to finish in the T5 position with Jamie Ferullo (Rochester CC).
