Arter wins Senior Hornblower for 1st time since 2015

Michael Arter won the Senior Hornblower Tuesday at Plymouth Country Club by a single stroke

PLYMOUTH, Mass. (Aug. 21, 2018) – Michael Arter is the Senior Hornblower champion after solid rounds of 70-72 at Plymouth Country Club. Arter also won this title in 2015.

Arter, 62, skated past runner-up John McNeill by a shot. McNeill closed with 69 to climb up the leaderboard on Day 2. He finished the tournament tied with Joe Walker, Frank Vana and Steve Tasho for third. All four golfers were 1 over for 36 holes at Plymouth Country Club.

Vana is a member of the Massachusetts Golf Hall of Fame. McNeill lost to Pat Scanlan in a playoff at last year’s Senior Hornblower.

In 2014, the Senior Hornblower became a separate event held in mid-August (before that, it was played along with the Hornblower Memorial in June). The tournament committee did this in order to provide more senior golfers with the opportunity to compete in the tournament.

One of the few differences between the two tournaments is that the Senior Hornblower is played from Plymouth’s gold tees instead of the longer black tees used in the traditional Hornblower. The 260-yard difference in tee placement still provides the players with a formidable 6,095-yard challenge on this 108-year-old Donald Ross masterpiece.
