Amateur Peicheng Chen wins New York State Open

With an incredible birdie putt on the 18th green, Chen edged another amateur (Matt Lowe) by a single shot today to win the New York State Open at Bethpage Black.

Chen matched the accomplishment of current PGA Tour start Cameron Young, who became the first amateur in the tournament's history to win the etch his name on the trophy when he captured the title in 2017.

The St. Johns University golfer conquered the U.S. Open venue at Bethpage Black where a sign on the first tee warns players:

"The Black Course is an extremely difficult course which we recommend only for highly skilled golfers."

Two of the players giving chase play out of the public facility on Long Island. One of them, another amateur named Matt Lowe, was leading Chen by a shot on the 18th tee but made bogey while Chen was holing his epic birdie putt.

The other, Kyle Brey of Famingdale, NY played golf at Barry University before turning professional. Brey finished T6 at even par. Out of the 62 players that made the cut, only five of them broke par.
