After almost withdrawing with a forearm injury, the Vero Beach resident persevered while Allen Barber topped the Super Seniors
William Mallon (Vero Beach, FL) didn’t have an easy week physically, but he delivered the steadiest golf of the 18th Spring Classic at Aileron Golf Club, winning the Senior Division with three straight rounds of 70.
Mallon finished at 6-under 210, holding off Todd Doss (Mandeville, LA) by three shots despite nearly withdrawing before the tournament because of a forearm injury.
“I just kind of fought through it,” Mallon said. “A lot of ice at night and rest as much as possible. I really had to depend on my putting, which was certainly the difference this week.”
That consistency proved decisive. Mallon never shot worse than 70, and even as he played conservatively, no one could quite close the gap.
Doss made the biggest late push, finishing runner-up at 3-under 213 after rounds of 73-70-70. His final-round charge included four straight birdies coming home, but Mallon’s control never fully cracked.
In the Super Senior Division, Allen Barber (Yorktown, VA) emerged as the player most comfortable on Aileron’s slick greens, closing with a 73 to win at 3-over 219. James Pearson (Charlotte, NC) and Bob Beck (Allentown, PA) shared runner-up honours at 7-over 223.
“It feels great to finally play well again,” Barber said. “I hit it really well this week and made pretty much all my short putts.”
Stephen Fox (Pinehurst, NC) added another Spring Classic trophy in the Legends Division, posting rounds of 77-69-74 to finish at 4-over 220. The 2023 Super Senior champion recovered from an early triple bogey in the final round and steadied himself late with four straight pars to edge Terry Tyson (Perrysburg, OH) by one.
The closest finish came in Super Legends, where Don Donatoni (West Chester, PA) outlasted Pete Allen (Southport, NC) in a playoff after both finished tied at 4-under 212. Allen forced extra holes with a birdie on the final hole, but Donatoni — a Legends winner in 2022 and 2024 — sealed it with a birdie on the first playoff hole.
Across four divisions, the Spring Classic ended with the same theme: steady golf, late nerve, and champions who found their best moments when it mattered most.

54 hole stroke play tournament for Society of Seniors Members only, with Senior (ages 55 and over), Super Senior (65+), Legend (70+) and Grand Master (75+) divisions.
