Wake closes with 275 to win in Puerto Rico as Haberer lands his first title
Wake Forest, the No. 25 men’s team, claimed its third title of the season on Tuesday, winning the Palmas del Mar Collegiate in Humacao, Puerto Rico.
The Demon Deacons finished 26-under-par 838 with rounds of 282-281-275, closing with a tournament-best 13-under final round to pull away from the 14-team field. It was also the 49th team win under head coach Jerry Haas.
Junior Tom Haberer delivered the week’s defining performance, earning his first collegiate title at 13-under 203 with rounds of 68-67-68. He won by two shots after three straight under-par cards, a steady run that anchored Wake’s push from the front.
Junior Nicholas Prieto finished runner-up at 11-under following rounds of 72-67-66, closing with his best stretch of the tournament when Wake needed it most.
Wake’s depth showed up behind them too. Senior Jakob Melin posted 70-73-72 to finish 1-under, while sophomore Jorge Hao closed with a 69 after 72-75 to finish even-par (72-75-69). Competing as an individual, senior Boyd Owens bounced back from an opening 76 with 68-69 to finish 3-under (76-68-69) and tie for 16th. Wake placed five players inside the top 25 and led the tournament with 66 birdies over three rounds.
No. 43 TCU finished runner-up at 20-under, signing for 290-273-281, while Southern Illinois took third at 15-under with rounds of 284-288-277. Defending champions No. 9 Arkansas did not enter the tournament.
The Puerto Rico trophy adds to a growing season haul: Wake Forest won the Bryan National Collegiate, followed it with the Highlands Invitational title in September, and now owns the Palmas del Mar crown for its third win of the year.
