Riebe, who is heading to Vanderbilt in the fall, defeated Chinn 3&1 to set up a matchup against Nicholas Gross
Michael Riebe, who advanced to match play from stroke play in a playoff and earned the final spot in the match play portion, defeated medalist Kelly Chinn 3&1 in the round of 32 to complete the upset at the North & South Men's Amateur Championship at Pinehurst Resort in Pinehurst, N.C.
This sets up a matchup of future SEC golfers, as Riebe, a rising freshman at Vanderbilt, will now face the No. 17 seed Nicholas Gross, who is heading to Alabama.
To earn medalist honors, Chinn shot a first-round 4-under 67 on No. 8 and a second-round 2-under 68 on No. 2 to get to 6-under and finish one shot ahead of Jackson Van Paris, Garrett Risner, and Brycen Jones. Jones, Risner, and Van Paris finished stroke play at 5-under and T2.
Van Paris advanced to the round of 16 with a 3&2 win over Hunter Swanson. Along with Van Paris, the No. 2 seed, the No. 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 seeds all advanced to the round of 32.
Van Paris put on another impressive showing in the stroke play portion after firing a course record 9-under 61 on No. 4 last year and earning medalist honors. Van Paris is currently ranked No. 16 in the Golfweek/AmateurGolf.com World Rankings.
Luke Colton finished in solo fifth place at 4-under, and Ben Warian, Reed Lotter, and Andi Xu finished T6 at 3-under. Warian won the 2024 Sunnehanna Amateur to kick off the Elite Amateur Golf Series.| Place | Player | Location | Pts | Scores |
