Bailo overcame a five-shot deficit in the final round to best the field by one shot
Octave Bailo from Mionnay, France, shot 2-over 290 following his rounds of 75-72-71-72 to win the Campeonato de Barcelona championship at Real Club de Golf El Prat - Recorrido Rosa in Barcelona.
Maximilian Puregger from Austria and Marcel Fonseca, the defending champion from Catalonia, shot a matching total score of 3-over par to register a joint runner-up finish at the tournament. Puregger carded rounds of 75-70-73-73, whereas Fonseca, the 54-hole leader, carded rounds of 67-74-72-78 at the tournament.
Puregger is ranked No. 624 in the Golfweek/AmateurGolf.com World Rankings.
Bailo began the final round T5, trailing Fonseca, the 54-hole leader, by five strokes at 3-under par. Ultimately, Bailo clinched the title with a final round of even-par 72, highlighted by three birdies in his last four holes. Fonseca stumbled in the last three holes, recording a bogey, a birdie, and a double-bogey on the final hole, ultimately losing by one stroke.
Puregger, who shared the T5 position with Bailo after the completion of 54 holes, found himself tied for the lead with Bailo after the 16th hole in the final round. Unfortunately, a double bogey on No. 17 proved to be a costly setback, denying him the opportunity to contend for the title.
Despite this setback, Puregger demonstrated resilience by posting an eagle on the final hole in an attempt to force a playoff. However, Bailo's timely birdie secured his victory and prevented the need for a playoff.
In the latter part of 2022, Bailo was signed with the University of Louisiana Monroe. Subsequently, in 2023, Bailo participated in 19 ranked events, securing victories in prestigious competitions on home turf—Grand Prix de la Loire, Grand Prix de Chamonix, and Grand Prix Messeiurs de la Ligue PACA. Additionally, Bailo achieved four more commendable top-10 finishes, culminating in a highly successful season.
The tournament attracted 82 amateurs from various regions of Spain, with 46 successfully making the cut.
